Michael Jackson fans can register for free tickets to the entertainer’s public memorial service at Staples Center by going online to staplescenter.com, while others can watch from home, organizers said Friday.
The memorial service is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday. Organizers offered few details on the tribute itself, including the format and who might perform or speak.
Organizers will provide 11,000 tickets for the 20,000-seat Staples Center and another 6,500 tickets for an overflow crowd at the Nokia Theatre, where the event will be simulcast on large video screens, said AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke.
Fans have until 6 p.m. Saturday to register at the Web site. A computer program will randomly select 8,750 names to receive two tickets for one venue or the other, he said.
Those selected to receive tickets will be notified between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, and will be given a code to use at the Ticketmaster.com Web site, which will give them further instructions on where to go Monday morning to get the tickets and wristbands enabling them to enter the venues, he said.
No tickets will be available at Staples or Nokia, and no tickets will sold, he said.
Although many Jackson fans from around the world are in Los Angeles to mourn the pop star, the free tickets are only available to U.S. residents, according to rules listed on the Staples Center Web site.
The area around Staples and Nokia will be blocked off by police, and there will be no outside broadcast in or around Staples Center.
The area around Staples will be cordoned off by police. There will be a “hard closure,’’ meaning no one without a ticket and wristband will be allowed into the area of Flower Street to the east, Olympic Boulevard to the north, Pico Boulevard to the South and Blaine Street to the West said LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger.
About 1,400 Los Angeles police will be used for crowd control, according to broadcast reports.
But the service is being offered free to TV networks, so fans who do not get tickets were encouraged to watch the service from the comfort of their own homes, said Councilwoman Jan Perry, who is acting mayor while Antonio Villaraigosa is on vacation in South Africa.
“Without a ticket the very best option for viewing and experiencing the service commemorating the life of this extraordinary individual is from their home,” she said.
The free TV feed is for broadcast outlets around the world. Details about the feed will be available at www.networklive.com after 6 p.m. Thursday.
Organizers also said there will be no funeral procession as had been rumored.
They also had no details on the family’s plans for a private service for the pop star or where he will be buried.
Jackson, 50, was pronounced dead June 25 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, about two hours after he was found in full cardiac arrest at his rented Holmby Hills estate. Jackson was in Los Angeles rehearsing for 50 sold-out concerts in London.
